Key Verse: Luke 19:11-27
Jesus felt the need to give the Jews and the disciples The Parable of the Ten Minas to help them understand that the physical manifestation of the Kingdom of God will not appear immediately (verse 12).
(v.13) The ten servants had one minas each therefore they all had an equal opportunity to go into business. The master/nobleman expected the ten servants to take the opportunity to build up his household.
After the master came home he encountered three types of people:
1. The good and faithful servant (v.16-17)
To the nobleman the first and second servant were both good and faithful because they used their abilities and giftings and did their best for their master and were awarded with rulership over cities.
Why is the reward cities? The nobleman had received his kingdom to rule over so he had the authority to reward his servants rulership over cities.
2. Lazy and wicked servant (v.20-21)
The reason why the third servant hid the mina in the handkerchief is because he believed the master to be a hard and strict man. The servant had the wrong perception of the nobleman.
The mina was taken from this servant and given to the first servant who had 10 minas. The master’s message to the servants is if you don’t use the mina it will be taken from you and you will have no reward.
For those who are faithful more will be given to you. When God gives you something to do, even if it is seemingly a small task, if you are faithful God will give more to you.
3. Enemies (v.27)
The nobleman judged the people that rejected Him as king and those who served under him. When Jesus returns He will judge everyone. We all need to give an account to God.
How does this apply to New Testament believers?
1. Jesus is the nobleman:
Jesus was telling the disciples that He needed to go back to His Father in Heaven to receive His Kingdom. Then Jesus will return to establish His physical kingdom on earth.
The spiritual kingdom of God is here in our midst, but the physical manifestation (Jesus’ return) has not yet arrived.
2. As New Testament believers we are all servants of Jesus:
The Parable of the Ten Minas is about responsibility and accountability. God has given us giftings and abilities in order to serve Him, this may not mean entering full-time ministry, it simply means we are all servants of God because we are in the Kingdom of God. We are responsible to use these giftings and abilities to build His Kingdom. At Jesus’ return we all will have to give an account of what we did with our gifts and abilities.
3. There are rewards if we use our giftings:
If you don’t use the giftings God has given, you lose it and there is no reward. Revelation 22 says the Lord will come back and His reward is with Him. The reward for us is that we will reign with Jesus as priests and kings on earth.
4. When Jesus returns He will destroy His enemies (Revelation 19):
There will be testing and judgement. We are all accountable to God. For those whose work is for the glory of God there will be rewards, but for those who do not there will be no reward but we will have our life. This is demonstrated in the parable of the ten minas.

The next step. As a way to grow closer to Him, the Bible tells us to follow up on our commitment.
- Get baptised as commanded by Christ.
- Tell someone else about your new faith in Christ.
- Spend time with God each day. It does not have to be a long period of time. Just develop the daily habit of praying to Him and reading His Word. Ask God to increase your faith and your understanding of the Bible.
- Seek fellowship with other followers of Jesus. Develop a group of believing friends to answer your questions and support you.
- Find a local church where you can worship God.
God bless you.
