Key Verse: Acts 2:1-4
The Holy Spirit is more than tongues, fire, wind, oil and water. Holy Spirit is God and He is a person.
What makes Holy Spirit God and a person?
1. Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4)
Holy Spirit revealed to Peter that Ananias and Sapphira lied not to man, but to Holy Spirit. Paul is another disciple who knew Holy Spirit is God as he says in 2 Corinthians 3:17 “Now the Lord is the Spirit…” Matthew 28:19, after Jesus’ resurrection He identified Holy Spirit as One with God and the Son, Jesus. In John 14:6 Jesus prepared His disciples to receive the Holy Spirit.
What makes God, God?
We can tell that God is God by His nature and divine attributes. The divine nature and attributes of God:
- God is holy. Holiness is the totality of His being. God is absolutely holy, i.e. pure, majestic, and glorious. Holy Spirit is not just any spirit, He is Holy Spirit and only God is holy.
- God is eternal. He has no beginning and no ending. Only God is eternal and Holy Spirit is the eternal spirit.
What makes Holy Spirit God?
- Holy Spirit is omnipotent (all powerful) – Genesis 1:2-3
- Holy Spirit is omniscient (all knowing) – 1 Corinthians 2:10
- Holy Spirit is omnipresent (all presence, He is everywhere) – Psalm 139:7
- Holy Spirit has a self-existant life – Romans 8:11
Holy Spirit is God because of His nature and divine attributes, He is: holy, eternal, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, and has a self-existant life.
2. Holy Spirit is a person
He has a personality, He is the third person of the Godhead (Father, Son, Holy Spirit).
What makes a person a person?
A person has self-awareness and self-direction.
What makes Holy Spirit a person?
Holy Spirit has these personality characteristics:
- Self-consciousness and self-directing power (John 3:8)
- Holy Spirit has the unique ability to speak in languages (Acts 8:29)
- Intelligence, intellectual mind (1 Corinthians 2:10)
- Will (1 Corinthians 12:11)
- Emotions (Ephesians 4:30). When you disobey Holy Spirit you can grieve Him. You can make Him sad and hurt His feelings, but He also has love (Romans 15:30).
Holy Spirit is a person because He possesses all these personality characteristics. We need to treat Holy Spirit as a person, not as a force, power or tongue. We can fellowship and communicate with Him person to person.
I encourage you to discover the Holy Spirit as God and a person. The Holy Spirit is willing to become a seed in you.
